We have been working to save the ladybird spider from extinction in Britain since 1993 developing a translocation method growing one population (once down to seven webs) to nearly 30 across the Dorset heaths. Males and females are satin-black and sub-terranean for most of their 4 to 5 year lives but, on maturing, males moult into bright ladybird colours and leave their burrows to find mates.
